First off, What are antioxidants?
According to WebMD, antioxidants protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. No, not the agitating and protesting college students found on campuses around the country, but are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (impaired) number of electrons that can do bad things to your body. Antioxidants protect the body against these free radicals.
Where are antioxidants found?
The short answer is that the best sources of antioxidants are fruits and vegetables. Two such fruits rich in antioxidants that I’ve come across in my research are Goji berries, and Acai berries. I wrote about Goji berries in an earlier post. Now, here’s what I can tell you about Acai berries.
Acai berries are produced by a palm tree common to the floodplain ares of the Amazon River. These dark purple berries contain a thin layer of edible pulp surrounding a large seed. One of the main plant chemicals getting a lot of attention in Acai is a group of flavonoids called anthocyanin. It’s a very well known antioxidant. Anthocyanin rich fruits have been shown to have anti-aging properties, help increase energy, and aid in many skin conditions.
Acai also contains naturally occurring plant-based vitamins B and E, minerals including iron and calcium, fiber and protein. Acai berries contain naturally occurring amino acids, essential fatty acids,(Omega 3,6,and 9), and have an extremely high amount of antioxidants compared to other fruits, even more than raw spinach. It has 10 to 30 times more anthocyanin than red wine.
Acai berries contain phytosterols which are natural plant-based chemicals that have been shown to offer immune system benefits.
So where can I find one of the best antioxidant supplements around?
The product that I have found, and used for a couple of years now, is called Chews-4-Health. It is a chewable tablet that contains both Goji berries and Acai, along with many other health promoting fruits and vegetables. You can find it by clicking on the banner below.
